    Hey Mr. Riley! Loving the videos! Definitely appreciated this one on red flags, me and my 3D Artist friends all send little screenshots to each other of crazy job listings and all the red flags you mentioned there show up constantly on them. You seem like a real genuine guy and I'm hoping your channel will grow further!

    Thanks for sharing Riley! I agree with you on these ideas - especially when it comes to some of the "kiddo" terms like, "wizard," "rockstar," or, I would argue, even the term "junior" could fall into that category as well. Not every industry refers to entry-level candidates as "juniors," and I think it's subtly diminishing even though it's common. I've been on the hiring side of things lately, and I can say for sure I've avoided candidates that take on "kiddo" terms because I'm looking for people who come off as legit as possible.

    As a student right now, videos like these are really valuable! Thank you for talking baout this important topic. When I am finished with my 3D education next year I am really exited what will await me. Luckly I have some time on my hands after graduating to find a job, but I would still like to get a job asap. Thank you for your insight into red flags, I never though about the "family" topic that way, but now that you said it it really makes sense why one should be thinking critically about it!

    My red flag for this at the moment? There is barely any junior listings. Im literally about to graduate from University after finishing my Games Art course and i feel scared because i feel like I won't be able to find a job opportunity in this industry. Every time i click on a application it always: "2-3+ years experience in AAA games." Or something like that. I've had the opportunity to speak to some people from the industry in person before my university lessons finished and frankly yes i was told i gotta work on my texturing more, which im willing to improve, and that my topology was rather good. But right now i just don't feel optimistic about this industry at the moment with the layoffs and whatnot.. (If you wish to see my portfolio im happy to email/link it in the comments if anyone wants to look at my work)

    First of all i liked the video very informative and nicely structured for this kind of topic ! and second i have some questions if i may ? How would you say do these Red Flags inifluence A Beginner 3D Artist like myself especially if i just want to get in the Market ? I mean i Try to look online at Job Listings and i kinda dont have a lot of choices which really limits my ways of avoiding these types of Things. I know stuff like Freelancing you Definitly have more control to avoid such things but if i want to have any Job which is more Traditional i just cant dodge all of this because i want to get in first. Or how could a beginner suggest a changes to not get any of these red flags and maybe still have a chance at work ?

      If you feel you’ve got a good offer, ultimately you’ll have to make the call. Try and think of your communication as a tool for setting boundaries, not closing doors. A hard “no” is a luxury you can use only when you have options, or time to search. How do you feel about your portfolio?

    • @rudolfkaizer44

      @@rileyb3d I Think you are right but its still definitly a lot more difficult to set those Boundaries right without seeming undesirable for a employer because of the many other applicants i think at least. About my Portfolio im Definitly not There yet. Right now i am Building it and think i will be Ready in 1-1.5 Month to start Presenting myself to positions in advertising if there are any avaiable for a Beginner like me. Sorry if it sounded as if im already giving out applications. Do you have any Advice on what to build as a Beginner to have good chances getting into a Position ? Right Now im Focusing on hard Surface/Clean Topology but i feel like that is Not enough because i think its expected to also know a lot about lighting/Materials/Textures/Rendering ? And do you think it would be good to also consider thinks gaming industry, film, TV, architecture and interior design solutions, engineering, websites or what would be the best choice ? Sorry that im asking so much im just really invested in this and hoped to gain some valuable information on this topic !

      @@rudolfkaizer44 I'll help if I can. Your portfolio will be far more influential in your search than anything we're talking about in this video. These red flags are important to be aware of, but secondary to your ability to showcase what you do. Your portfolio is your main priority for now. I do have advice on what to build as a beginner. There's a lot more to get into, but as a very brief bit of advice, it'd be good to focus on a specialty. If you're looking to get hired at a studio, you'll have a specialized role. If you want to focus on hard surface modeling, that's great. Focus on portfolio pieces that showcase your ability in that specifically. If you're applying for a junior modeling position, you will not need to texture and light as well. Those are other specialties. If you want to market yourself as more of a generalist, that's a different story. You would need some projects under your belt to showcase your skill in various areas. I don't totally get the question you asked at the end. Maybe you could clarify for me. If you're asking what the best choice is for an industry to get into, that's not something I can answer for you. We could probably dedicate a whole episode to your question. Please feel free to follow up with other questions you've got. I'll answer what I can, but UA-cam comment section is a little limiting for me.

    The video at the end is looking awesome. Can't wait to see what you come up with! And to the topic of this video, I sometimes read job listings just for fun and they all look like giant waving red flags to me. Just notice the ratio between requirements and benefits. It's 8:2 tops, many don't even bother to list benefits. Also notice how concrete the requirements are. "X years of AAA experience." "Strong understanding of this and that". Benefits on the other hand are vague. "Competitive Salary"? What does that even mean? "Opportunity to develop your skills". Oh wow, thank you. I could never do that without you. I am so glad I am not looking for a job.

    • @rileyb3d
      @rileyb3d 2 дні тому

      Thanks! It’s been fun to work on. Episode one is getting pretty close to release. What I don’t get about the strict experience requirements is I honestly feel it says little about practical capabilities. I’ve hired artists with 2 years experience that are far more capable than some with 5+. I get the thought to list it as a desired thing, but as a strict requirement doesn’t make sense.

  • @jhneilson

    I had a "red flag" experience a few months ago. Made it pretty far in the interview process and was asked to do an art test within a week. The amount of work required to complete the test exceeded what I felt would fit inside a typical work-week. I emailed and let them know I didn't want to set a precedent where I would be continually overworked. The test was also unpaid, which I wish I would have mentioned as another grievance. They were understanding in their reply. I just hope they received other feedback similar to mine. Maybe the biggest factor for me in job satisfaction is whether I feel appreciated or taken for granted. An employer communicates this in a lot of ways--compensation, boundaries, showing gratitude and trust. Unfortunately, you can't always detect that during the interview process, but watching for those red flags is key.

    • @rileyb3d
      @rileyb3d 2 дні тому

      @@jhneilson That feels like a great way to sum up a lot. That feeling of being respected and appreciated definitely comes through in a lot of different ways (some more subtle than others).

    One small tip on the exposure compensation of 8 to match up with blender: this is due to "physical camera exposure" being ticked. One way to make things easy is to set it to 1 and just untick "physical camera exposure". What's good about this is it decouples things like DOF from exposure, which is actually quite nice.

    I'm going through a bit of this right now. The first time this happened -- maybe 5+ years ago -- it sucked but it put things into perspective for me and forced me to answer these basic questions: What I want from my career and how I want to live. It's a process and I think the answers change over time. In the end, it worked out better than I expected and I believe the same thing will happen this time around. I'm handling it much better with a clearer personal vision, good exercise and eating better. After reviewing your work and your dedication to your craft, you'll be fine. Trust the process!

    I used to think such work was unnecessary, as I was working on low poly objects... started looking into blending edges with textures as beveling helps me to smooth edges, but increases geometry exponentially (when using many low poly objects). Looking forward to using this method too, as it works in cycles :D
